How to Install a Ceiling Medallion

Decorating your home to perfection can cost a lot of money. One of the more affordable ways to add a little elegance to your home is by installing a decorative ceiling medallion for your light fixture.

Originally used with chandeliers to protect ceilings from candle burns, a ceiling medallion is now used for detail and luxury. The decorative medallions are not intended or designed to provide any structural support for the lighting fixture, so it's important that all instructions are properly followed when installing both the lighting fixture and ceiling medallion. Also, for safety precautions, when dealing closely with electrical wires, you should consider shutting off the fuse or disconnecting all wires until done. If ever in doubt, consider hiring an electrician. Most electricians are very familiar with installing medallions with the light fixture.

The medallion should have a pre-cut hole directly in the middle to allow electrical wiring to run through it. Bellow are step-by-step directions on how to properly install a ceiling medallion in your home.

1. Center hole
As mentioned before, ceiling medallions have to have a hole cut in the center in order for the electrical wiring to run through properly. If the hole isn't pre-cut, use a spade or twist bit.

2. Paint
Paint or finish the ceiling medallion before installation. It's much easier to paint an object on the ground than to paint it while it's stuck to the ceiling. This will also make your clean up a lot easier than having to tape up the ceiling for a messy paint job. Be sure you don't use lacquer based paints for this.

3. It's time to hang the medallion
Apply construction adhesive to the back of the medallion. Consider using a caulking gun to apply the adhesive to make things go faster. Before doing anything electrical, place the medallion over the fixture opening and hold it in place a short while. The construction adhesive should secure the medallion to the ceiling, but on larger medallions or textured ceiling surfaces you may want to consider utilizing screws to further secure the medallion to the ceiling. Connect the wires as called for in the fixture's instruction manual, and then slide the loop ring up to firmly secure the fixture.

4. Medallion manicure
Fill the screw holes, if any, with spackle and paint when dry. You can also caulk the space between the medallion and the ceiling if it doesn't match up completely. Paint this too.
